Natalia’s Autumn Picks 2022

Selected by Natalia de la Ossa

I was introduced to Mariana Enriquez by Megan Marsh in the summer of 2017 when Things We Lost in the Fire was published in the UK; after reading it we both spent time comparing our experiences of fear and why some stories reflected our memories of of living in big cities. Our Share of the Night (translated by Megan McDowell) is her new novel, and has been described as a blend of the gothic and supernatural.

Also in my picks: a new memoir by Salvadorean author, Javier Zamora, Solito is about his journey as a child alone from El Salvador to the USA to meet his parents, who both fled the war, in a caravan of immigrants all trying to survive the long journey; A Ballet of Lepers, a story, a playscript and short stories written by Leonard Cohen between 1956 and 1961 – I love his lyrics, so can only hope his prose is just as moving; and Seven Empty Houses by Samanta Schweblin (also translated by Megan McDowell), who has previously written the extraordinary novels Fever Dream and Mouthful of Birds.

From the publisher:
‘Heartbreaking… A rare, eye-opening rendition of the brutal reality of border-crossing.’ Lea Ypi‘If there’s any justice, Solito will someday be considered a classic.’ Rumaan AlamYoung…

From the publisher:
